Education is a Wonderful Thing
When my children would complain about school or reading (or learning in general), my mom would always tell them “Education is a wonderful thing”. They would smile and begrudgingly agree with her because who can argue such a valid point? Education IS a wonderful thing. It doesn’t matter whether you have attended the finest university or are self-taught; educating your mind keeps you engaged and active.
When I stumble onto a new passion (there have been more than a few through the years), I can’t help but totally immerse myself in the subject. When I started keeping chickens, I read every book, magazine and practically every blog post ever written. I wanted to learn how to be the best chicken mama out there. The same thing happened when I became interested in growing flowers. I started with Erin Benzakin’s book Cut Flower Garden. She recommended Lynn Byzanski’s book, The Flower Farmer, and that snowballed into several on-line courses, magazines articles, blog posts, pod casts, and more and more and more books including several by Lisa Mason Ziegler of The Gardener’s Workshop along with an invaluable Instagram account by Muddy Acres Flower Farm. As an adult, I’ve discovered that if you can find a subject you are passionate about, you will absolutely love to learn.
And for those asking, YES, I have read every one of these books (and several more) except for three of them which are reference manuals. I only refer to them when I have a specific question about growing, caring for, or harvesting a specific plant or flower.
